Milkstage Oats-Published in The Link (Mar 09)

It is not a stretch to say we live in a stressful environment. For some, winter can be extra taxing, leaving us with ‘frayed’ nerves. This can actually be a literal saying, as with chronically stressful situations, the myelin sheath which covers our nerve bundles can thin and become ‘frayed’. This sheath is where the nervous impulse occurs, and is very important to our internal communication system.
Oatstraw is rich in silicon, which is needed to rebuild this necessary nerve tissue. Regular use of Oatstraw infusions will nourish the nervous system, leaving us calmer and feeling less stressed. When used at the milky stage (green stalks), Oatstraw is high in vitamins A, C and B complex (also good for the nerves) and the minerals silicon, calcium and magnesium. For those unable to get these minerals from dairy, this can be a good source. Oatstraw is highly nutritious, a tonic for the heart as well, and can lift the spirits.
This plant builds our very life force and enhances our sensory organs – particularly touch. Enhanced sensing can lead to increased pleasure. Hence, it is also considered an aphrodisiac for both men and women.
Use two handfuls of the dried herb in 4-6 cups of cold water in a pot. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Drink 1-3 cups per day, storing the remainder in the refrigerator.
Try adding some rolled oats (in a cloth bag or sock) to a bath. This is an old treatment for chicken pox, to reduce the itchiness, but can be soothing to the skin. It will make the water soft and smooth, and your skin, too.
Lets not forget that oats are a basic food. Still a nutritious way to start the day, oats give you more than you might expect.
